D2 Set for Playoff Rematch with App State on Friday
Blacksburg, VA – April 17, 2025 - The postseason is here, and Virginia Tech Men’s Lacrosse Division II is locked in for a Friday night playoff clash against a familiar foe—Appalachian State. Faceoff is set for 5:00 PM on home turf in what promises to be a gritty, hard-fought battle between two tough ALC rivals.
This matchup marks the second meeting between these squads this season. The Hokies came out on top back in February, earning a 14-9 road win in Boone in a physical, back-and-forth contest that showcased their depth and resilience. However, history reminds us that this App State team is no stranger to pulling off playoff wins—they eliminated the Hokies in last year’s quarterfinals.
“We know what’s at stake, and we know who we’re playing,” said Head Coach Joel Smith. “App State is a strong team and battle-tested. They got the best of us last year, and our guys are motivated to flip that script this time around.”
Virginia Tech will lean heavily on the leadership of Justin Cole in the cage, whose presence and poise have been a steady force all season. On the offensive side, the Hokies are powered by the dynamic duo of Danny McGann and Greg Durkin, both of whom have been major contributors in key moments throughout the spring.
App State brings a physical and disciplined brand of lacrosse and will surely come ready to play. The Hokies know they'll need to be sharp from the opening whistle and bring their A-game to advance in the ALC Tournament.
