D1 HOKIES SPLIT WEEKEND AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
BLACKSBURG, VA – The Virginia Tech Hokies Division I lacrosse team faced off against a pair of ranked opponents this weekend, splitting the results with a hard-fought loss to Texas before bouncing back with a strong win over Georgia Tech.
On Saturday, the Hokies came out firing against Texas, jumping out to an early lead behind an aggressive offensive attack and disciplined defensive play. Despite holding momentum for much of the game, Virginia Tech was unable to hold off a late Longhorns rally, ultimately falling 13-12 in a game that came down to the final possessions.
“We played with great energy and put ourselves in a position to win against a top team,” said Head Coach Panchito Ojeda. “Unfortunately, we just didn’t execute in key moments down the stretch. But I’m proud of the way we competed.”
The Hokies responded on Sunday with a commanding 11-8 victory over Georgia Tech, controlling the pace of play and capitalizing on key offensive opportunities. Virginia Tech’s defense stepped up in the second half, limiting the Yellow Jackets’ chances and sealing the win.
“This was a huge response from our team,” said team captain Trevor Stocks. “After the Texas game, we knew we had to clean things up and bring the same energy for four full quarters. We did that today, and it showed in the result.”
With the split weekend, the Hokies move to 5-3 on the season as they continue their push toward postseason play.
“We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend,” added Coach Panchito Ojeda. “This group has the potential to compete at the highest level, and we’re going to keep building on these experiences moving forward.”
Virginia Tech will be back in action next weekend as they take on Chapman in another key matchup.
